2 Businesses that do work in times of crisis: Gyms and coaches

2 Negocios que sí funcionan en tiempos de crisis: Gimnasios y coachs

The creation of companies in Spain fell by 1.1% in June compared to the same month last year, with 7,550 new companies being established, according to the INE (National Institute of Statistics).

Despite these figures, the collapse in household consumption, and the VAT increase, there are still various types of businesses that have not only remained unaffected by the crisis but have actually emerged stronger. The following article from Consumer lists some of these booming businesses during this time of crisis.

Businesses that emerge in times of crisis

In the second quarter of the year, GDP fell by 1.3%, due to the collapse in household consumption. Experts fear that economic activity will worsen in the second half of the year and will not improve in 2013 either.

However, the crisis and high unemployment rates in Spain are causing many people to consider starting their own business.

According to the INE survey, the sector with the highest number of new businesses in June 2012 was retail, accounting for 22.2% of the total, followed by construction and real estate development, with 20.8%. While the survival of countless businesses is uncertain, others are thriving despite the crisis.

Before starting a business venture, it is essential to be familiar with the major market trends and, in particular, to know the business sectors with the greatest growth potential.

Also, before investing money or dedicating time and effort, anyone intending to start a business should consider whether their project has potential in the market and whether it suits their knowledge and skills.

It is important to have very clear ideas from the beginning and reflect on the viability of the initiative.

Here are two clear examples of businesses that do work in times of crisis:

  • Gyms, beauty centers and dietetic product stores. Taking care of oneself and losing weight to be attractive makes people feel more confident, among other things, in the event of a job offer. In this sense, gyms are experiencing high demand, and thanks to this growth, stores selling organic products and sports nutrition are also increasing.
  • Personal coach. This professional is dedicated to helping people develop greater personal effectiveness. This role is increasingly popular in Spain, especially in companies, as it encourages employees to reach their full potential and managers to perform at their best. The services of a personal coach are in demand, and generally, both companies and individuals who use them are satisfied.
